Akenji, who is with the Japan-based think tank Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, was speaking at October`s World Resources Forum (WRF) in Davos, Switzerland, where many of the world`s environmental experts had gathered to discuss how to create an economy largely without waste.  With new technology and sorting techniques, single-stream recycling programs have proven to increase recycling rates—because, again, they make it easier and more convenient—and to significantly reduce recycling costs. We need better education, better community outreach and innovative programs to make recycling so convenient for residents and businesses in this city that it becomes as ordinary as taking out the garbage. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours - or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline. A 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 1 pound of steel.According to StEP (Solving the E-Waste Problem) , an estimated 75 million tons of damaged, obsolete or simply unwanted electronic devices will be discarded as e-waste in 2015 - triple the amount in 2010.  In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes! The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours or a compact fluorescent bulb for 20 hours. These recycling facts have been compiled from various sources including the National Recycling Coalition, the Environmental Protection Agency, and While I make every effort to provide accurate information, I make no warranty or guarantee that the facts presented here are exact. We`re excited to announce that we have changed our name from Far West Fibers to Far West Recycling.  In the 25 states with no takeback laws, Best Buy has been pretty much the only recycling game in town, or even entire counties, for electronics recycling, particularly for big stuff like TVs. Meanwhile, Amazon and Walmart, the No. 3 and No. 4 consumer electronics retailers in 2014, continue to do nothing very meaningful to help consumers recycle all the products we are buying from them, especially the big stuff like TVs. We continue to encourage consumers to stop buying electronics from retailers who do little to encourage and facilitate recycling and reuse of old products. As part of our series Bay Curious , we are answering questions from KQED listeners and readers.  While many of them do have takeback programs, most do little or nothing in the states where the law doesn`t require it. Most offer mailback recycling programs, but most consumers don`t use them except for trading in high-value items like smartphones. People want to drop off their old stuff at a physical location, and not bother finding a box and packing it up to ship for recycling. Recycling helps keep disposal costs down while preserving natural resources and protecting the air, soil, and groundwater.Cecilia works a five-block strip along Calle Paraguay in Palermo, a hip district in downtown Buenos Aires.  Many states have passed ‘producer responsibility` recycling laws , requiring manufacturers to take back and recycle old products. There are two certification programs for electronics recyclers in the U.S. - e-Stewards and R2 Until recently, Best Buy required recyclers to be certified to both standards. The solution here would be for the manufacturers - particularly the TV companies - to visibly partner with Best Buy to cover some of the recycling costs, and to make sure that responsible recycling occurs. Recycling not only avoids these harmful effects, but also the use of recycled instead of virgin materials.

Any consumer who has been denied this right by a recycling center can file a complaint via email or by calling 1-800-RECYCLE. If recycling more than 50 containers of any one material type, the decision to pay by count or weight is determined by the recycling center operator. If the load includes containers not eligible for CRV, the recycling center must either reject the load or pay only scrap value. All recycling center days and hours of operation are determined and overseen by the individual recycling center operator and must be posted at the center. If you would like to report a recycling center closure or file a formal complaint regarding a certified recycling center, please email CalRecycle or call 1-800-RECYCLE. Aluminum cans are also the most valuable to recycling companies, with a value of $1,491 per ton compared to $385 per ton for PET plastic. Improved education regarding the proper materials to recycle is needed to allow recycling plants to remain economically feasible.Cans are recycled at the highest rates, and drive recycling programs across the country because of the high value of aluminum compared to other packaging materials,” said Heidi Brock, President and CEO of the Aluminum Association. In recent years, however, recycling companies are struggling with higher processing costs, due in part to newer, larger recycling bins that don`t require user sorting and thus become increasingly contaminated with garbage. When the District of Columbia replaced residents` 32-gallon bins with ones that were 50 percent larger last year, the extensive amount of non-recyclable material put into the bins drove up the city`s processing cost for recyclables and cut profits from selling recyclables by more than 50 percent. Conservation of natural resources is often not counted” yet is a major benefit of recycling. The pros and cons of recycling are heavily debated, but there`s never an argument over the environmental benefits of limiting disposable packaging and utilizing more durable reusable goods, like shopping bags, coffee thermoses and water bottles, to name a few, in daily life. Recyclables are collected curbside at Albuquerque households, at recycling drop-off sites throughout the city, and at the city`s Eagle Rock Convenience Center But collection is only the first step in the recycling process. A true cost comparison of recycling and landfilling must examine the full costs of those services on a program by program basis.

Researching the costs of each program requires an analysis of curbside collection and processing/management costs - however, the majority of recycling programs offer opportunities for revenues to offset some recycling costs - waste to landfill offers no such opportunity. Recycling is an important economic engine and job creator, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs across the country and generating $11.2 billion in tax revenues for the federal, state and local governments.Recycling also avoids the mining and extraction of raw materials, reducing environmental impacts in communities where mining waste can seriously degrade local landscapes and water resources. When one looks at the facts, it is clear that recycling makes much more sense than burying or burning our waste. The National Recycling Coalition encourages all Americans to recycle, not just because it seems like the right thing to do but because it makes clear environmental and economic sense. The National Recycling Coalition is a non-profit organization focused on promoting and enhancing recycling in the United States. We, like our governments, have largely come to think of recycling as having no downside. Recycling is greatly pushed in government policy, but waste reduction and prevention are more rarely found in legislation. With an increasing demand for resources, recycling has turned into a profitable business and the industry is booming.Perhaps most striking, an awareness of recycling can make people more likely to consume more. Most of those involved in promoting recycling or resource efficiency suggest that for recycling to be sustainable, it has to be incorporated more completely into products` life cycle. That is, their eventual recycling should be built into their design from the beginning. For de Moraes, it`s important to reconnect recycling to the production cycle and provide insights from recycling processes to the beginning of the value chain to improve product design.Concerns about recycling are not widely held among environmental experts, and most see little realistic alternatives that can manage the world`s waste problems as effectively. He sees limited possibilities for transferring recycling knowledge to the design of products; incentives are missing for the producer, he said, and capacities are limited. Roland Weippert, an expert in metal recycling after incineration, agrees that there are few means so far to advise product designers on increasing recyclability.
